What Is A Knee Issue?

Knee issues can be caused by injuries, mechanical problems, types of arthritis and other problems.

A knee injury can affect any of the ligaments, tendons or fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that surround your knee joint as well as the bones, cartilage and ligaments that form the joint itself.

This is where the problem lies: when a harsh repetitive force is applied on the foot for example walking everyday on a hard flat concrete ground with unsupportive footwear, the big toe simply can not activate properly which can switch of the quad, gluts and abdominal core muscles. Developing a knee issue can be a reaction to a dysfunctional gait cycle.

What Causes Knee issues?

At Podiatry x Recovery we view the knee as a stability joint in the body. When the foot or hip loses mobility the knee is usually the joint that compensates heavily. The main cause of a knee issue is the dysfunctional biomechanics of the knee.  Due to dysfunctional walking mechanics, the knee compensates by internally rotating compressing the mensicus, bone and ligaments of the knee.

There are a few factors for developing a knee issues:

  • Repetitive activities
  • Long periods of standing
  • Genetic predisposition (Flat feet or High arches)
  • Improper foot or hip mechanics
  • Weight gain
  • Age
  • Unsupportive footwear
  • Walking barefoot on hard surfaces

How We Can Help

Manuel Therapy: We help to release tight muscles in the leg through deep tissue massage, mobilisation and foot adjustments, dry needling, shockwave therapy which can help slow down the bunion’s development.

Education: We provide you with the education to understand the exact “why” your developing the knee issue and how you can self help the situation with core stretches + strengthening techniques, footwear recommendations and self release techniques to aid the healing process.

Orthotic Therapy: An orthotic device can be a really helpful tool to help re-correct the foot’s alignment and create an arch supporting the foot’s dysfunctional biomechanics. This can help prevent the knee issue from getting worse without the need for surgery.
